A Soft Drink A Day Raises Prostate Cancer Risk: Study

Men who drink one normal-sized soft drink per day are at greater risk of getting more aggressive forms of prostate cancer, according to a Swedish study released Monday. “Among the men who drank a lot of soft drinks or other drinks with added sugar, we saw an increased risk of prostate cancer of around 40 percent,” said Isabel Drake, a PhD student at Lund University. The study, to be published in the upcoming edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed over 8,000 men aged 45 to 73 for an average of 15 years. Those who drank one 330-millilitre […]

Fruits and Vegetables of November

Remember, remember, the 5th of November, or Bonfire Night as it is known in Britain. What’s interesting is that this is one particular celebration or commemorative day that there does not appear to be any particular food associated with, perhaps because it isn’t an American celebration. We celebrate everything with food. There must be some marshmallows or chestnuts roasting or potatoes baking in those bonfires somewhere. Green Tea Noodles With Edamame by Michelle February 9, 2012 A few weeks ago, I wrote about the flaxseed meatloaf from a new cookbook called FoodTrients. I am in love with this cookbook. The recipes are tasty, healthy and each photograph is more beautiful than the last. Though I’m not much of a noodle fan, this recipe intrigued me because it calls for soba noodles, a Japanese variety made from buckwheat flour. . . I think the tangy ginger dressing is what makes this dish. It’s so, so flavorful. And cooking the noodles in green tea gives them an antioxidant […]

Making a Case for ‘Other’ Milks

While I was growing up, my father made sure that I didn’t eat too many dairy products. He was a doctor and he felt that the saturated fats in animal products were best enjoyed in moderation. To this day, I don’t really drink milk. Lately, I’m not alone. Many people have come to question the wisdom of drinking cow’s milk every day

By Dianna Marder, Inquirer Staff Writer From “Foodtrients: Age-Defying Recipes for a Sustainable Life” In Southeast Asia, where her mother’s side of the family ran a cooking school, Grace O cooked and baked professionally. Now in California, O, the daughter of a physician, operates skilled nursing facilities and continues her culinary passions. Small wonder her new cookbook focuses on food’s naturally occurring nutrients. Not all her recipes are weeknight-worthy as far as timing is concerned. But this one, which relies on the strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of green tea, is a quickie. Green Tea Noodles with Edamame and Ginger […]
