By Grace O The right foods, herbs and spices can help us detox, lose weight, improve our skin and live longer, more vital lives. But how do you know which foods to choose? One of the things I set out to do in my cookbooks is to make it easy to see what each recipe (and its ingredients) can do for you. We started out with five symbols (icons) for the benefits in my first cookbook, The Age GRACEfully Cookbook, but I expanded it to eight icons in my new book, The Age Beautifully Cookbook. Here’s what each icon means: […]
Microgreens are springing up all over, which means sprouts have a come a long way since the 1970s. Today, almost everyone is a health nut—interested in prolonging life, feeling as good as possible, and looking as young as can be. Because of that, chefs and foodies have decided to take another look at home sprouting. Of course, today the preferred term is “microgreens,” but really that includes baby shoots from vegetables, or beans, or seeds, or even grains. Sprouts, or microgreens, are very healthy because they contain all of the nutrients of bigger, adult plants in their young, tender shoots. Generally […]

Over the past several decades, scientific research has intensified and focused on analyzing the hundreds of unique bio-active compounds found in the medicinal Reishi Mushroom. Just this year alone, three new compounds were discovered. With each new finding, intriguing medical applications for Reishi have emerged. There is now a wealth of impressive data that demonstrates Reishi’s life extending properties, but also its significant ability to stimulate brain neurons, search and destroy cancer cells and prevent the development of new fat cells in obese individuals. As an example of growing science supporting Reishi, researchers using laboratory mice have detailed life span […]

Men who do not smoke and eat a lot of soy may have a lower risk of lung cancer, according to a new study, BBC health reported. Soy contains isoflavones, which act similarly to the hormone estrogen, and may have anti-cancer qualities in hormone-related cancers of the breast and prostate. Cells in the lung have properties that suggest they may also respond to isoflavones. Reaserchers studied more than 36,000 men and more than 40,000 women, 45 to 74 years old and free of cancer at the start of the study. The researchers followed the women for about 11 years, after […]
Falling asleep during conference calls or snatching siestas several times a day may be a sign of nutrient deficiency, and could lead to more serious consequences than being caught snoozing on the conference line, notes a recent U.S. News & World Report article. “Fatigue can be like an early warning sign of potentially more severe problems down the road if you don’t recognize and treat the problem causing the fatigue,” Dr. Anthony Komaroff, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a senior physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said in the story. The top deficiencies that […]

Even the highest quality bakeries can’t seem to figure out how to mimic baking with wheat flour. Enter Chris Miller, a Kansas researcher who is developing a strain of wheat that will be safe for those with celiac. Celiac-Safe Wheat Chris Miller, director of wheat quality research for Heartland Plant Innovations in Manhattan, Kansas, is working with the Kansas Wheat Commission to develop a wheat-strain that will be safe for those with celiac disease. Boron is a trace mineral which is utilized in relatively small amounts in the body. Compared to minerals such as calcium and magnesium, boron and its benefits are not as well-known. Even though it’s a trace mineral, boron still possesses biological activity. A study at the University of Illinois quantified boron levels in 12 human tissue sites, including bone, skin, and muscle. The positive effects of boron became better known when Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw began reporting new research on the subject. Below we’ll touch on many of the roles boron plays in health.
