While blueberries and strawberries usually gain recognition for their health-enhancing properties, raspberries have quietly built an impressive resume of vast health benefits that match any berry. The fruit’s potent anti-inflammatory power contributes to fighting obesity, enhancing cardiovascular support, battling cancer, and combating diabetes. Raspberries’ History Although the exact origin of raspberries (Rubus spp.) is unknown, it’s believed they were cultivated in Europe more than 2,000 years ago and introduced to North America from eastern Asia through trading. The edible fruit is one of the most popular berries in the world, with top producers in Russia, the United States, Serbia, and […]
Do you experience frustrating “mystery” rashes with no clue as to what’s causing them? You might want to check the labels of your skin or hair care products. This common enzyme causes strong allergic reactions in sensitive people. Papain Could Be Causing Your Chronic Skin Rash I often have patients who consult me for troublesome rashes that show up out of nowhere. They can occur anywhere on the body, but the most common areas are the face and hands. They can range from mild to marked in severity and cause a lot of distress. I usually identify the culprit when […]
Do you love coffee? If so, here’s some more good news regarding coffee and your health. A recent study found that coffee drinkers may be better protected against the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma. The results were published in the January issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Four Cups of Coffee a Day Linked to 20% Lower Melanoma Risk Researchers from Yale analyzed data from a study involving over 440,000 people. Participants were given food questionnaires which analyzed their coffee intake. They were followed up after a period of 10 years, on average, to determine the incidence of melanoma. Compared […]
In your quest to keep your skin looking youthful longer, I’ve got some exciting news for you. Dermatology researchers now think they may have found the mechanism that triggers skin aging. In addition, a new natural source of a powerful skin anti-oxidant has been found as well. These 2 discoveries could be the 2 biggest breakthroughs in skin aging that you’ll want to know all about. Let’s start with the first one… Glycans: This Skin Sugar May Hold The Key To Skin Aging Up to age 30, you have an abundance of a skin surface sugar called “glycan”. After age […]
For my patients who are at high risk for a heart attack or stroke, I’ve sometimes recommended a simple daily aspirin for prevention. But, recently, it was learned that over half of U.S. seniors are taking daily aspirin on their own without their doctors recommendation. If you’re one of those seniors, here’s what you should know about using aspirin for prevention. Daily Aspirin as Prevention: Pros and Cons A recent national survey was conducted by Oregon State University regarding aspirin use amongst seniors. They found that an overwhelming majority of seniors – 81% – take aspirin as a preventative measure. […]
The public is becoming more and more savvy (and knowledgeable) when it comes to what they are eating. The documentaries about healthy, natural food and the research done on pesticides and preservatives have changed the way we view what we eat. The large chain restaurants, such as McDonalds, have experienced a significant drop in sales since the beginning of the year. McDonalds has plans to lure customers back into their stores by tidying up their menus, closing weak stores, and bumping up the minimum wage salary for employees. Some of the other chains are taking a healthier approach by removing […]
Now that you’re older, you may be having a hard time tolerating summer heat, especially when the humidity is high. A new study shows that supplementing with a certain vitamin may be what you need to feel better in summer heat. Folic Acid Helps Older People Tolerate Summer Heat When you were a kid you could probably handle summer heat pretty well. You stayed out playing all day with your friends without a second thought. But, after age 50, you may have noticed that you don’t tolerate summer heat, especially high humidity, the way you used to. In addition, summer […]
I was sitting in my friend’s lush, tropical-style garden recently, admiring her beautiful collection of flowering bromeliads. These are very exotic looking plants with spiky leaves and red, pink or golden elongated flowers reaching out from the middle. They are native to the tropics of Central and South America and West Africa. In a colorfully glazed pot there was a miniature ornamental pineapple. I remembered that pineapples are also bromeliads and this got me thinking about how much I enjoy pineapple and the wonderful things pineapples do for your health. Pineapples are second only to bananas as Americans’ favorite tropical […]
A new analysis by Environmental Working Group has found that harmful artificial trans fatty acids lurk in more than 27 percent of more than 84,000 processed foods common in American supermarkets. Another 10 percent contain ingredients likely to contain trans fat. EWG analysts used information from EWG’s Food Scores database and mobile app to determine which foods contained partially hydrogenated oils and other ingredients that harbor trans fat. The interactive, searchable tool rates more than 84,000 foods and 5,000 ingredients based on nutrition, ingredient and processing concerns. In most cases, the products’ trans fat content on the nutrition label doesn’t add up. The reason: an obscure […]
If you’re over 50, you may be seeing more skin aging than you want to. You look into expensive creams and treatments that, although they may help, don’t really offer a lasting effect. But take heart. In about 2 years, a brand product to fight skin aging could be available commercially. Let me tell you about it… Scientists Find a New Method To Block Skin Aging Many of the most important health discoveries were stumbled on by accident. Researchers were actually looking for something else when they found something amazing. And that’s exactly the case with a new “aging” enzyme […]
