Over the past several decades, scientific research has intensified and focused on analyzing the hundreds of unique bio-active compounds found in the medicinal Reishi Mushroom. Just this year alone, three new compounds were discovered. With each new finding, intriguing medical applications for Reishi have emerged. There is now a wealth of impressive data that demonstrates Reishi’s life extending properties, but also its significant ability to stimulate brain neurons, search and destroy cancer cells and prevent the development of new fat cells in obese individuals. As an example of growing science supporting Reishi, researchers using laboratory mice have detailed life span […]
At the first sign of a runny nose many of my patients load up on Vitamin C for its protection and relief from the common cold. Some take vitamin C in supplement form whereas others prefer to stock up on juices and fruits. What most people are surprised to learn is that an orange does not top the list of fruits for vitamin C content although it is the most common. Other fruits such as guava, kiwi, and strawberries actually contain more vitamin C than citrus.
This dish is an interesting way to add more soy to your diet. The isoflavones in soy may help maintain bone density, reduce the risk of certain cancers, protect against heart disease, and help alleviate symptoms of menopause. The Omega-3s in the tofu help skin retain its natural moisture. This recipe is inspired by the Chinese steamed custards served at dim sum. You can put almost anything under the silken tofu layer, and the garnishes are endless. Serves 2-4 Ingredients 1 package (8 oz.) silken tofu Pinch of salt 10-12 dried shiitake mushrooms 1/4 lb. peeled shrimp (devein, if desired) […]
Many of you may not have known much about chia until it became a household word about a decade ago when chia “pets” were everywhere. Remember those terra-cotta plant holders in the shape of an animal that grew chia plants out the top of the head? Chia seeds have actually been around since the days of the Aztec civilization when they were used for food, medicine, and currency and were highly valued. Modern health researchers have found that those same chia seeds have a lot of health benefits. They can also have a few health drawbacks so I’d like to […]

The reason…is that the cocoa bean, which is one main ingredient in chocolate that is rich in flavanols, has an antioxidant effect that reduces the cell […]
Many people have never heard of annatto, also called achiote. The closest most of us in North America have come to this tiny seed that grows in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean is cheddar cheese. Annatto is used to color the naturally white cheddar a pleasant shade of orange. Stunning new research shows that this often overlooked spice from the rainforest is very good for us. For centuries, folk healers have used annatto to treat infections topically and orally.
