Low Dose Aspirin Could Help Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

On July 2, 2018, The Journal of Neuroscience reported the discovery of an ability of aspirin to decrease amyloid beta plaque in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The presence in the brain of amyloid beta plaques, along with neurofibrillary tangles made up of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, are among the characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Dr Pahan and colleagues determined that aspirin upregulates transcription factor EB (TFEB), a regulator of lysosome formation. “Lysosomes play a central role in cellular homeostasis by regulating the cellular degradative machinery,” lead researcher Kalipada Pahan, PhD, and colleagues explain. “Since aberrant lysosomal function has been associated with […]

Baking Soda Improves Cancer Treatment?

Consuming baking soda may help immunotherapy drugs to fight difficult-to-treat tumors. This cheap and simple intervention may eventually improve current cancer treatments. Baking soda could help to boost immunotherapy. Within tumors, large portions are deprived of oxygen. Scientists know that these hypoxic regions tend to be the most resistant to treatment. If a cell is unable to access adequate oxygen, it slows down and enters what is known as a quiescent state. The molecular switch mTORC1 is responsible for assessing the situation before telling the cell whether or not it should divide. If mTORC1 is not present, the cell’s internal […]

Probiotics Can Prolong Your Bones

In a first, Swedish researchers have discovered protective effects for probiotic supplementation against the loss of bone that occurs in aging humans. The study was reported on June 21, 2018 in the Journal of Internal Medicine. In a randomized trial, 90 women with low bone mineral density who were between the ages of 75 to 80 years were given a placebo or the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri 6475 for 12 months. Tibial bone mineral density was assessed at the beginning and end of the study. “When we finished the study after a year, we measured the women’s bone loss in their lower legs with a CT […]

Coffee May Actually Help Prevent Arrhythmia

Contrary to common belief, coffee does not increase abnormal heart rhythms known as arrhythmias but, rather, helps prevent them, according to a review published in the April 2018 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Clinical Electrophysiology. “There is a public perception, often based on anecdotal experience, that caffeine is a common acute trigger for heart rhythm problems,” stated lead author Peter Kistler, MBBS, PhD, of Alfred Hospital and Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Australia. “Our extensive review of the medical literature suggests this is not the case.” One cup of coffee contains an average of 95 milligrams of caffeine. […]

Pro-Veggie Diets Prevent Heart Attacks

There’s an endless debate about eating meat, especially when it relates to the risk of heart disease. Some people advocate a meat-based diet, while others avoid it at all costs. The truth may lie somewhere in the middle. A pro-veggie diet, in which plants make up 70% or more of the meals, may be the answer. A recent study showed that it dramatically reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Pro-Veggie Diet Reduces Heart Attack and Stroke Risk by 20% In the study, researchers from the American Heart Association analyzed the diet of 451,256 Europeans. They also collected information on height, […]

This Book Challenges Status Quo for Aging

Joe Coughlin, the director of the MIT Age Lab, wants to help companies unlock the world’s fastest-growing, most misunderstood market — aging Boomers. His new book, The Longevity Economy, describes how companies can prepare for the guaranteed — an aging world. By 2050, people over 65 will be more than 16.7% of the world’s population—and more than 25% of the populations of some European and Asian countries. Yet “less than 15 percent of companies have established any sort of strategies focused on older adults.” Meanwhile, older women in particular are projected by economists to have a huge influence on the […]
