Hypoglycemia: How To Manage Low Blood Sugar

I frequently see patients complaining that they can get “spacey”, i.e., unable to concentrate, words a little jumbled, headachy, or a little dizzy and irritable if they haven’t eaten for several hours. These are the basic symptoms caused by blood sugar falling a little low, or hypoglycemia, and it occurs from having gone too long without eating. Low blood sugar is a condition that can be remedied quickly with some orange juice, or raisins, right away, and then making sure you follow that with a more balanced nutritious meal. I’d like to share more detail about this condition with you, […]

African Plant Reveals Possible Treatment for Aging Brain

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies issued the following news release: For hundreds of years, healers in Sao Tome e Principe–an island off the western coast of Africa–have prescribed cata-manginga leaves and bark to their patients. These pickings from the Voacanga africana tree are said to decrease inflammation and ease the symptoms of mental disorders. Now, scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have discovered that the power of the plant isn’t just folklore: a compound isolated from Voacanga africana protects cells from altered molecular pathways linked to Alzheimer’s disease (http://www.salk.edu/ra/alzheimers_and_aging.html), Parkinson’s disease and the neurodegeneration that often follows a stroke. “What this provides us with […]

Can Curcumin Treat Pancreatic Cancer?

Within the last couple of decades, significant strides have not been made in the field of pancreatic cancer. To date, the best treatment option (if diagnosed early) is a surgery called the Whipple Procedure which was developed in the 1930s. With few treatments on the horizon, it makes sense to seek alternatives. One nutrient which seems promising is curcumin. In an animal study, it significantly decreased the size of pancreatic tumors. Curcumin Reduced the Size of Tumors by 42% Curcumin is extracted from an Indian spice called turmeric. It is one of the most important anti-cancer nutrients studied today. Over 2,000 published studies show […]

Green Tea Could Reduce Pancreatic Cancer Risk

A new study explains how green tea changed the metabolism of pancreatic cancer cells, opening a new area in cancer-fighting research. Green tea and its extracts have been widely touted as potential treatments for cancer, as well as several other diseases. But scientists have struggled to explain how the green tea and its extracts may work to reduce the risk of cancer or to slow the growth of cancer cells. A study recently published online by the journal, Metabolomics, offers an explanation that researchers say could open a new area of cancer-fighting research. The study reports that EGCG, the active […]

The 7 Best Gluten-Free Pizza Delivery Places

There’s nothing like a good pizza. The combination of melted mozzarella, spicy sauce and warm crust is enough to make me drool as I write this. Since cutting gluten out of my diet I have experimented quite a lot (and in my humble opinion, perfected) making gluten-free pizza crust. But to be honest, what I miss the most is coming home after a long day of work and being able to pick up the phone and order a pie when I don’t have the energy to cook. When first starting out on a gluten-free diet, a lot of people think […]

Resveratrol Improves Glucose Control In Diabetics

The results of a meta-analysis scheduled for publication in the June 2014 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicate that supplementing with resveratrol, a compound that occurs in red grapes and wine, could help improve glucose control and insulin sensitivity in men and women with diabetes without affecting glycemic measures in those without the disease. Researchers from Chongqing, China selected eleven randomized, controlled trials of resveratrol supplementation that included a total of 388 participants for their analysis.  Resveratrol dose ranged from 8 to 1500 milligrams per day for periods of two weeks to six months. Three of the trials involved diabetic subjects. […]

EWG Creates Shopper’s Guide To Avoiding GE Foods

More than 75 percent of food in supermarkets is genetically engineered or contains GE ingredients, according to some estimates. So how do you tell what is natural and what has been manufactured? The guide highlights the four most common GE foods and ingredients — soybeans, sugar, vegetable oils, and varieties of field corn. Some 93 percent of soybeans and 90 percent of corn grown in the U.S. have been genetically engineered.
