We’re Going Nuts For This Food!

I travel a lot and am continually on the move. I never want to get so hungry that I am tempted to grab just anything, so I always stash a supply of nuts in my purse or briefcase. You really can’t go wrong with a snack of nuts. Yes, they are high in fat and calories, but nuts have healthful fats and are nutrient dense. That means they are loaded with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Just one ounce of nuts delivers many important nutrients and the fat, protein and fiber they contain provide a feeling of satiety.

Baobab: Superfood from the Tree of Life

When I first started looking for a U.S. source for baobab four years ago, the market was quite limited, but I was sent several bags of Baobest’s Organic Baobab Powder so I could create recipes for my Age Beautifully Cookbook. The more I looked into the benefits of baobab, the more excited I was to create recipes with the powder. My Baobab Butter Bars are one of my favorites, and I serve them often at parties and events. Today there are more than a dozen companies selling baobab powder on Amazon. The fruit looks almost like a velvet-covered yam dangling […]

Foods That Keep Those Joints Jumpin’

Spring is here, the days are longer and it’s time to get active. My busy schedule makes it challenging to find time to exercise, but luckily the weather in Southern California makes it easy to get outside year-round.  Lately, I have been swimming almost every day and taking walks whenever I can. If the thought of picking up that tennis racquet or tying on those hiking boots makes you dread achy knees and shoulders, start thinking about how what you eat can help protect your joints and other moving parts.

FoodTrients Pack Powers of Medicine

As a healthcare professional, I see doctors prescribe five, ten, even twenty medications to one patient without giving any nutritional advice. I’m not saying that food should replace all medicines, and you should check with your doctor to make sure that any medications you take are not counteracted by a particular food.  However, I do think that the plate is the place to start for living a long and healthy life. For centuries, many cultures have used natural foods as their medicine chest. They understand that certain herbs and leaves offer curative powers. Hippocrates, a Greek physician who practiced medicine […]

Honey-Lime Dressing

This is a very versatile dressing that you can toss with my Apple Barley Salad or with any mixed greens. The lime juice provides immune-boosting vitamin C, while antioxidant compounds in the chili powder help to neutralize free radicals in your cells. If you want a spicier dressing, add cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Both contain capsaicin, which stimulates circulation. This dressing makes the perfect marinade for my Summertime Grilled Chicken. The lime brings out the flavor of the poultry, and the olive oil keeps it from sticking to the grill. To use this dressing with fruit salad, simply […]

Pizza: Slicing It with FoodTrients

Recently, I was asked to appear in the Rustic Crust (www.rusticcrust.com) booth at the Natural Products Expo West at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Actress and natural-food advocate Jamie Luner appeared alongside me, and the FoodTrients team passed out samples of four dips and spreads I created specifically for Rustic Crust ciabatta (see recipes).

Parties, Potlucks & Food That Travels Well

December is rife with holiday parties and I love to entertain. Mostly I throw parties at my home or in elegant hotels like the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Occasionally I attend potluck parties at other people’s homes. Bringing food to a party can be tricky. It has to be prepared ahead of time, survive being packed and transported, and look elegant once it’s plated at the party site. Also, it needs to taste great at room temperature, unless you have a crock pot and can keep it warm (see story on our crock pot giveaway below). These are not […]
