An abundance of clinical data has established pomegranate as a broad-spectrum, multi-modal defense against the leading causes of death in the Western world, from atherosclerosis to cancer and diabetes. In the last decade alone, more than seven times as many studies have been published validating pomegranate than in all the preceding years combined. The bulk of this research has focused on the benefits of pomegranate juice and fruit extracts. Now scientists are discovering a novel source of pomegranate’s myriad benefits: the various botanical components of the pomegranate tree, particularly its seeds and flowers. The latest scientific evidence indicates that pomegranate flower extract and seed oil uniquely complement conventional pomegranate fruit extract’s capacity to […]
This winter we need to be particularly careful to avoid colds and flu. I am just too busy to get sick, so I pay special attention to what I eat. My father was a doctor in Southeast Asia and he always said that if you are in general good health, get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water and wash your hands frequently, you’re doing a lot to prevent a nasty case of the flu. Now, as we fight a pandemic, we need to wear masks in public to protect ourselves and others. Here are some immune-boosting foods that are […]
Food additives are substances that become part of a food product when they are added during the processing or making of that food. They are added in an effort to keep products fresh, increase the amount of nutrients and make the food more appealing.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. According to the latest data from the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly 1 million deaths per year, continuing to surpass cancer and other major causes of mortality. Beyond the human toll, heart disease remains one of the most expensive health conditions in the country, costing the U.S. over $400 billion annually in healthcare expenses and lost productivity. Most people focus on the obvious risk factors — diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol. But there’s another potential contributor that doesn’t get nearly […]
It’s often alleged that Colorado sees 300 days of sunshine every year. While some will nitpick that number, we all know there is a splendid amount of sunshine in our beloved Centennial State. But there’s a steep price to pay for all of that sunshine, including skin cancer and skin aging. The UVA and UVB rays are to blame, as they can cause the formation of free radicals, a term used to describe damaged cells that can be problematic. “Sun is good,” said Judy Spindler, a nutrition health coach at Natural Grocers. “We need it for hormones and to feel well, but it […]
As if the health risks of soda weren’t already enough, a new study shows it may also be linked to accelerated aging. In a study, telomeres, the end caps of DNA strands that serve as a marker for aging, were found to be shortened in people who drink soda. The results were published in the American Journal for Public Health. Soda Aged Cells by About Five Years In previous studies, the length of telomeres has been associated with disease and mortality. Shortened telomeres are linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Researchers surveyed over 5,000 Americans between the ages of 20 to 65 years. They […]
Chia has gained recent popularity for good reason; these little seeds are nutrient powerhouses: High in protein (great for lean muscle, burning fat, and balancing blood sugar levels). High in fiber (providing nearly 11 grams per ounce) Anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) (this helps reduce the growth of cancer cells in both breast and cervical cancers). Including chia seeds in your diet can deliver a healthy breakfast or afternoon energy boost because chia is associated with vitality and satiety due to the balance in fat, fiber and protein they contain. Chia absorbs water and expands, so if you enjoy […]
At least one Big Business is listening to its consumers. Nestlé announced this month that they will no longer be using artificial colors in its candy products and the chocolate makers hope that other food manufacturers will soon follow suit. Artificial colors were highlighted in EWG’s recent Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives because of lingering questions about their safety and effects on human health. EWG research shows that artificial colors are heavily used in processed foods that have little nutritional value. The additive is an ingredient in about 12,500 products in EWG’s online food database, Food Scores: Rate Your Plate. Over the last 40 […]
