Plant-Based Meals Are Growing on the Table

Here in Los Angeles, with our access to plentiful produce and a pervasive interest in healthy eating, we have a long history of plant-based cuisine. In 1885, a newspaper called The Daily Alta California reported on a popular vegetarian brunch item, “Quartered alligator pears with the pulp spread on slices of grilled bread and seasoned with salt and pepper.” Today we know this delicacy as avocado toast! When Upton Sinclair published The Jungle in 1906, it highlighted the exploitation of workers and unsanitary conditions in the meat packing industry in Chicago. The novel inspired a minor craze for vegetarian restaurants […]

Variety Is the Spice of India’s Powerful Flavors

India is home to a wide variety of foods and cuisines based on region and culture. Northern regions often consume aromatic, savory gravies, stir-fries, and flatbreads, Southern regions incorporate rice, lentils, tomato and tamarind into their dishes, and those living on the coast eat seafood, rice, and coconut-based foods (very generally speaking). Many people in India are vegetarians while others regularly eat mutton and chicken. One theme seen throughout this country is the incorporation of spices while cooking. Not only do the spices provide powerful flavoring, but they provide some great medicinal uses as well. Indian cuisine is known for […]

Is Apple Cider Vinegar Good for Us?

Ever wonder if all those too-good-to-be-true-sounding claims about apple cider vinegar (ACV) are true? Let’s break down the research! ACV is created from ripe, high-sugar apples that have undergone a fermentation process to convert the sugar to alcohol and then to acetic acid. Many of the health benefits of ACV are linked to the “mother” — a combination of yeast, probiotics, and enzymes created during the fermentation process. The “mother” is the cloud-like glob in the bottom of the bottle of many ACV bottles on the market. ACV has long been considered a cure-all in some traditional medicine circles, but […]

Beneficial Saffron Is the ‘Queen of Spices’

Saffron is a spice sometimes referred to as “red gold” or “the queen of spices” with some impressive potential health benefits. It is one of the most expensive spices in the world, mostly due to its costly production and labor-intensive harvesting process. Saffron originated in the Mediterranean region and has long been used as a traditional spice, coloring agent, and medicine. In addition to adding a vibrant golden color to dishes, saffron adds a subtly sweet and floral flavor. Many of saffron’s health benefits stem back to its high levels of three powerful antioxidants which may play an important role […]

Grace O Foundation to Fund CIRCL Research Award on Nutrition, Cancer and the Diseases of Aging

The Grace O Foundation has graciously pledged $300,000 to Cedars-Sinai CIRCL to create the Grace O Foundation CIRCL Award. Previous research has shown that chronic inflammation is implicated in cancer, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, in addition to various neurologic and gastrointestinal diseases. Because of the long-term nature of chronic inflammation, and its implication in symptoms such as high sugar levels, high blood pressure and high triglycerides, it’s not easily understood if chronic inflammation increases the […]

Eating Walnuts May Extend Your Life

Harvard scientists recently found that 60-year-olds who ate five weekly servings of walnuts had a 1.3-year increase in lifespan. Walnuts may protect against diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Walnuts provide an array of health benefits. New evidence suggests that regular walnut consumption may contribute to a longer life.1 In a landmark study using data collected over 20 years, scientists with Harvard University discovered a link between eating more walnuts and a lower overall risk of death among older adults. This observational study found that 60-year-old Americans who ate five or more servings of walnuts per week lived roughly 1.3 years longer than those who never ate walnuts.1  They also had a 14% lower risk of death from any cause and a […]
