It’s hot out there! Just a small change in dehydration is enough to affect mood, ability to concentrate, and the development of headaches. We all know water is good for us and that we should probably drink more of it. So why, then, do Americans find it so difficult to sip from what is arguably the fountain of youth? Answers vary, but the fact is, one in 10 Americans drinks zero cups of water per day, according to a study by Dr. Alyson Goodman, a medical epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Zero. She suspects that those who […]
I believe that food can be just as effective at fighting aging as the most expensive skin creams. Certain FoodTrients like omega-3 fatty acids and the Vitamins C & E are very good for building collagen, hydrating skin, keeping skin elastic, and helping to build strong nails and hair. Some of my favorite beauty-enhancing recipes from my cookbooks are my Fresh Turmeric Juice, Sweet Potato and Jackfruit Delight, Papaya Salsa, and Salmon Poached in Pickling Spices. So we all know by now that the right foods can help us maintain a healthy weight, keep our arteries unclogged, and reduce inflammation. […]
With the recent rise in number of people who are becoming more health conscious, it seems as though this task is simultaneously becoming more difficult. Granted, many brands and restaurants are offering “healthier” options, but one of the largest problems for our waistlines and health still persists…the size of our meals. Our collective idea of what is a “normal” portion is getting to be larger each year…it’s nearly impossible to dine out where the meal served is actually one serving, or to find an individually wrapped snack that is truly for only one individual. However, bigger is not always better […]
Are you looking to bring your workout or athletic performance to the next level? Or maybe your muscles need a little extra support to recover quicker? Ashwagandha may actually be able to help. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine to help manage stress, promote energy, and boost immune function. Its ability to help our response to mental stress has led researchers to see if it has similar effects on physical stress — and the results look promising. Studies of ashwagandha have shown benefits in non-athletes and athletes, so you don’t have to currently be an athlete […]
Type 2 diabetes is running rampant in the United States, if not the world, today, particularly in the Boomer population. It’s one of the 4 diseases associated with aging and leads to the development of 2 of the others. It’s caused by too much refined sugar and carbohydrates in the diet as well as lack of exercise. In addition, deficiency in a certain food group, and its disease-fighting nutrients, can also lead to the development of type 2 diabetes as well as the other diseases of aging. They’re called flavonoids and I’d like to tell you more about the amazing […]
WASHINGTON – Conventional strawberries top the Dirty Dozen™ list of EWG’s 2016 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, displacing apples, which headed the list the last five years running. Nearly all strawberry samples – 98 percent – tested by federal officials had detectable pesticide residues. Forty percent had residues of 10 or more pesticides and some had residues of 17 different pesticides. Some of the chemicals detected on strawberries are relatively benign, but others are linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental damage, hormone disruption and neurological problems. Strawberries were once a seasonal, limited crop, but heavy use of pesticides has increased […]
Boron is a trace mineral which is utilized in relatively small amounts in the body. Compared to minerals such as calcium and magnesium, boron and its benefits are not as well-known. Even though it’s a trace mineral, boron still possesses biological activity. A study at the University of Illinois quantified boron levels in 12 human tissue sites, including bone, skin, and muscle. The positive effects of boron became better known when Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw began reporting new research on the subject. Below we’ll touch on many of the roles boron plays in health. Boron Protects Your Bones A […]
Patients who reverse their diabetes and then keep their weight down can remain free of the condition, research has found. The study found even those who have had Type 2 diabetes for up to 10 years can reverse their condition after adopting a very low calorie diet. Professor Roy Taylor, a world expert on the condition, which affects two-and-a-half million people in the UK and is increasing, published his findings in the journal Diabetes Care. The Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University has previously shown patients with Type 2 diabetes who successfully lose weight can reverse their condition […]
Over one billion people in the world are hungry and over one billion are overweight. Far from complete opposites, hunger and obesity are in fact different manifestations of the same problem: It’s increasingly difficult to find and eat nutritious food. In her new book, We the Eaters, author Ellen Gustafson describes how fast food corporations and junk food convenience stores are muscling out indigenous farming practices and wholesome food not only in our country, but around the world. Developing nations are getting a double whammy, she says, as nutrient-deficient junk food creates growth-stunting hunger in children, and she documents how […]
Even though humans cannot synthesize vitamin C, every tissue and cell in our body needs this nutrient for healthy growth and repair. Maintaining optimal levels of vitamin C is difficult because it is water soluble and cannot be stored in the body. This inability to maintain high vitamin C levels is recognized by researchers as limiting its potential benefit, especially with regard to chronic illness. For years, scientists have been looking for ways to boost the impact of each dose of vitamin C. Fortunately, a method has been discovered to increase the speed at which vitamin C is absorbed. Reaching peak concentrations […]
