Like most of my patients, you likely know that you need adequate calcium in your diet to keep your bones strong and prevent against fracture, as you get older. It’s that holiday time of year again when food and snacks are everywhere. It’s almost impossible to ignore the lure of snack bowls filled with candies, nuts, and chips, at parties or office get-togethers.
Recently a 14-year-old Maryland girl died after drinking 2 Monster Energy drinks in a 24-hour period. One 24 oz can has as much caffeine as seven 12 oz cans of regular soda. That means this girl took in 14 times the amount of caffeine in 2 cans of regular soda in 24 hours. It was also learned that the girl had an underlying heart condition which this jolt of caffeine aggravated and lead to her death. In addition, at least 4 other people have died after drinking high-energy drinks. As a result, the FDA has stepped in to investigate, not […]

Brad Morris knew that losing weight would not be easy. Yet he knew that
Recently, I fielded some questions from a local college student who is in the middle of a research project on health food. She discovered the FoodTrients website and wanted to use me as a source for some of her research. I, in turn, reached out to a nutritionist who works with me in my skilled nursing facilities to help answer the more technical questions. This was an interesting exercise and I thought I would share the results since some of you might have similar questions about nutrition and eating habits. One of the questions dealt with whey protein isolate. Whey […]
Like many of my patients you may want to do your best for the health of your heart (and the rest of you) and yet may be confused about which foods are the best.
Dear Health-Minded Reader, In the near future, your doctor may prescribe a new drug called Prasterone. It has some wonderful benefits: lowers your risk of cancer, beats depression, improves bone density, just to name a few. But the price tag will be in the neighborhood of $100 to $150 a month.
