When I ask my patients how many ORACs they take in a day, they give me a kind of lost look. One patient humorously asked me once, “Is that some kind of fruit?” Well, yes and no. ORACs are in fruit – but they’re not a food per se. Let me share with you what I tell my patients about the ORAC value of foods and its importance to your health. What’s ORAC and Why Is It In My Food? ORAC is the acronym for Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity – an antioxidant measurement system developed by researchers at the National […]
Like myself, and most of my patients, you probably have insurance policies on many things – your house, your car, your health, and, most importantly, your life. Why? Because they give you peace of mind. They cover, and perhaps even prevent, possible problems that might occur that could cost you a fortune to solve – even cause you to go bankrupt. In the same way, taking supplements – vitamins, minerals, certain herbs on occasion – are like taking out a nutritional insurance policy for yourself. Like all your other insurances, I feel that supplements offer additional peace of mind that […]

“What’s all the hype about eating green foods?” This is a question many of my patients are asking me more often these days. It seems everywhere you look there is some mention of going green in one way or another. People are not only becoming more conscious about preserving the environment, they also want to protect their bodies from everyday pollutants. Choosing foods described as “detoxifiers” are considered good for the liver and helpful in ridding the body of food preservatives. Detox diets usually recommend cutting out many foods with additives, along with meat and dairy products to combat what […]

Herbal remedies have been around for a long time and are used for many different purposes. One of the most common among them is stress relief. When stress becomes a more serious factor in your life then you’ll want to seek medical help and use that in combination with herbal solutions – just make sure your doctor is aware of any herbal remedies you are using now or have used recently. If you’re interested in learning about how herbal remedies can help reduce stress, the following information will be useful for you. Consider using passion flower, a natural sedative, to […]
Not only is this book informative, helpful, and interesting to read – it is packed full of beautiful photos of tempting food. Grace O begins by explaining the ingredients and their benefits that may be lesser-known to some, for example- chia, hemp milk, moringa, and soursop. Although it’s not necessarily what is stressed, one look at this book reinforces the fact that “eating your colors” is one way to get most of your essential nutrients. Even though I mentioned a few ingredients that may be lesser-known to some people, the majority of the ingredients she uses are whole foods that […]
In the last several years, more information has surfaced about the safety of chemicals used to create Teflon (PTFE) and other non-stick surface coated pans. It was found that with use, scraping food with utensils could cause tiny flecks of these chemical-based surfaces to get into your food. Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had deemed that ingesting small particles of these pan surfaces has not been shown to cause any real health problems, many of my patients decided to throw out their non-stick cookware and switch back to cast iron or aluminum. Cast iron cookware has been around […]
The scariest part of Alzheimer’s Disease is that doctors still don’t quite fully
Your body will never waste a calorie. Each calorie is either burned for energy or stored for later use. Calories come in three forms, which are the macromolecules of human nutrition: fat, protein and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are interesting. The basic building block of all carbohydrates, whether simple or complex, is a single sugar molecule called glucose. This means that all carbohydrates, from whole grains to table sugar, will eventually break down into a single glucose molecule. Glucose is the main energy source for all cells, including your heart, brain and muscles. But here’s where it gets interesting: Sugar, if it’s not burned […]
