Natural Products Expo: Where the Elite Eats Meet!

The determined FoodTrients team took on legendary Southern California traffic, parking lots filled to capacity by 8:00 a.m., and the threat of a monsoon-like storm to visit and evaluate a million square feet of exhibit space at this year’s Natural Products Expo West at the Anaheim Convention Center, in the shadow of Disneyland. This is the largest natural products trade show in the world and this year’s event broke records—again! There were more than 3,000 exhibitors and over 77,000 registered attendees—up 6.9% over last year. This included 600 first-time exhibitors. Besides its enormous size, the most notable characteristic of this […]

Wild Green Oats Boost Dopamine

Have you ever wondered why you no longer can process information and focus quite as well as you did in your youth? Or have you ever pondered as to why it is so difficult for some people to stay away from the dessert table or quit smoking? The answer may be due to one common denominator that resides within your brain…dopamine. What is Dopamine? Dopamine is known as the “feel-good” neurotransmitter that signals neurons to regulate mood and brain function and plays a large role in reward behavior. Around age 45–60, the enzyme that breaks down dopamine, called monoamine oxidase-B […]

EWG’s Dietary Guidelines Give Straight Facts

WASHINGTON– EWG’s new Dietary Guidelines give people solid nutrition advice and highlight the shortcomings of the Obama administration’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans released earlier this month, which were confusing to consumers and overly influenced by the $1 trillion-a-year food industry. “These guidelines serve the public interest, not the vested interests,” said Ken Cook, president and co-founder of EWG. The government’s guidelines watered down evidence that a plant-based diet is better for health and the environment by not clearly advising Americans to eat less meat. These guidelines did not explain the serious health risks of exposure to mercury in certain fish. […]

Not in the mood? An extract from the herb fenugreek may actually help. While most of us are familiar with those “blue pill” ads targeted to males experiencing “Low-T”, female sex drive – or a lack of it – has received far less attention. Interestingly enough, a recent study from Australia showed that fenugreek helped women regain sexual function. The results were published in the journal Phytotherapy Research. Fenugreek Increases Sexual Desire and Arousal in Women A lagging libido can be due to many factors. Relationship issues, depression, and even hormonal imbalances may be at play. A Whole New World of Pastabilities

Fair or not, in the fight against carbs, pasta has gotten a bad rap lately. Yes, white pasta is relatively high in calories (200 per 2 oz. dry) and has modest nutritional value with about 2g of fiber and 7g of protein, but there are many alternative pastas that are better nutritional investments. And like the enriched macaroni products we’re most familiar with, they are all good canvases for a wide variety of toppings, flavors and textures. I won’t give up my noodles and with these alternatives, you won’t have to. Grain Pasta Switching to whole grain pasta provides a […]

FDA Bans 3 Toxic Chemicals From Food Wrapping

WASHINGTON – Under pressure from EWG and other environmental and health groups, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is banning three grease-resistant chemical substances linked to cancer and birth defects from use in pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, sandwich wrappers and other food packaging. The FDA’s belated action comes more than a decade after EWG and other advocates sounded alarms and five years after U.S. chemical companies stopped making the chemicals. It does nothing to prevent food processors and packagers from using almost 100 related chemicals that may also be hazardous. “Industrial chemicals that pollute people’s blood clearly have no […]

Brace Yourself – Tis the Season to Be Merry!

Here we go again, anticipating another holiday season.  I can’t help but ask where did the time go?  Is it just me or are you all feeling the same way?  Seems I was just writing about how to set goals for the New Year and in a blink another year has slipped away. I always tell myself that next year will be different.  I’ll slow down my pace for working, running, and doing so I can embrace all the precious moments the holiday season brings.   Yet somehow, I’m right back in the same place wondering how in the world will […]

3 More Reasons to Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water certainly seems like a given. We all know that water is essential for health, but a lot of us (including me) just don’t make it a point to drink enough daily. For starters, water is critical for flushing out toxins, carrying nutrients to your cells, and providing a healthy environment for your ears, nose and throat. However, in this post, we’ll explore three lesser-known benefits of water that you may not be aware of (but totally should be). Water Keeps You Sharp Feeling a little dull? Check your hydration status. Research shows mild dehydration may impact short-term […]
