Are Your Fruits and Veggies Causing Food Posioning?

With the recent Listeria bacteria scare that’s still ongoing, many of my patients have asked me how they can really protect themselves against a foodborne illness.  It’s true; people bought and ate infected cantaloupes that, by all intents and purposes, didn’t look to be tainted. How can you be sure that any raw fruit and vegetables you eat are really safe to eat even if they look perfectly fine? The answer is you can’t. Let me share with you, however, the things you can do to lower your risk of getting sick from fruits and vegetables. Stay Healthy, Use Safe Practices […]

Spice Up Your Food and Your Health

Our culture is finally starting to view the food that we eat as a potential medicine chest. Every day, scientists are discovering more and more that certain herbs, spices, and leaves offer curative powers that can help us overcome disease. These spices originated in India, Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. Indian cuisine often relies on 10–20 spices in just one recipe.

Baobab: Superfood from the Tree of Life

When I first started looking for a U.S. source for baobab four years ago, the market was quite limited, but I was sent several bags of Baobest’s Organic Baobab Powder so I could create recipes for my Age Beautifully Cookbook. The more I looked into the benefits of baobab, the more excited I was to create recipes with the powder. My Baobab Butter Bars are one of my favorites, and I serve them often at parties and events. Today there are more than a dozen companies selling baobab powder on Amazon. The fruit looks almost like a velvet-covered yam dangling […]

Detoxing: Ultimate Body Tune-Up

When I was growing up, my aunt taught me the value of cleansing my body from toxic substances to prevent illness and help in the healing process. Today we know that uric acid can build up in our joints.

Foods That Keep Those Joints Jumpin’

Spring is here, the days are longer and it’s time to get active. My busy schedule makes it challenging to find time to exercise, but luckily the weather in Southern California makes it easy to get outside year-round.  Lately, I have been swimming almost every day and taking walks whenever I can. If the thought of picking up that tennis racquet or tying on those hiking boots makes you dread achy knees and shoulders, start thinking about how what you eat can help protect your joints and other moving parts.

Sugar, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s: Unraveling the Truth

Recent studies have led to an interesting correlation between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. One prominent study (published online by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health) concluded that sugar consumption “correlated significantly” with diabetes, “independently of other socioeconomic, dietary and obesity prevalence changes.” In plain English, they found that the more sugar you consume and the longer you consume it, the higher your diabetes risk; and as sugar consumption drops, diabetes rates drop as well. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the most common form, is caused by insulin resistance in peripheral tissues and is most frequently […]

Fried Meat May Raise Risk of Diabetes

Toxic chemicals found at high concentrations in fried and grilled meats may raise the risk of diabetes and dementia, researchers say. US scientists found that rodents raised on a Western-style diet rich in compounds called glycotoxins showed early signs of diabetes, along with brain changes and symptoms that are seen in Alzheimer’s disease. The findings matched what the researchers saw in a small number of older people, where those with higher levels of glycotoxins in their circulation had memory and other cognitive problems, and signs of insulin resistance, which precedes diabetes. The results are tentative, but if confirmed by other […]

Why Diet ALWAYS Matters

Virtually every day, we’re all bombarded with advice about our diets. We’re told which foods to eat to have more energy, reduce our cholesterol, lower our chances of a heart attack, reduce our risk of getting cancer … yet once someone is diagnosed with cancer, these recommendations often fall by the wayside. Though defying both common sense and good science, some cancer patients are still hearing “eat whatever you want, you need to keep up your strength,” by their physicians. And, this holds true even when their dietary choices are loaded with saturated fats and refined sugars! At the Block […]
