Learning To Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s

What would you do if you knew Alzheimer’s disease was in your future? Jamie Ten Napel Tyrone was only 49 years old when she learned she had a genetic predisposition toward Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Her genes translated to a 91 percent chance that she would contract the disease during her lifetime. As a former nurse, and with her family’s history with AD, Jamie decided to take action rather than concede defeat. She founded B.A.B.E.S. (Beating Alzheimer’s By Embracing Science) to raise money and awareness in the search for a cure. Working with Marwan Noel Sabbagh, MD, and John Hanc, they […]

Exercise Hormone May Protect Against Alzheimer’s

A hormone released during exercise may protect the brain against Alzheimer’s disease, research suggests. Irisin is a messenger protein generated by muscle tissue that is carried around the body in the bloodstream. The new evidence indicates that it may be behind the known positive effects on mental performance of taking exercise. US and Brazilian scientists found lower levels of the hormone in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients compared with healthy individuals. The same was true for the precursor protein from which irisin is derived, FNDC5. In tests on genetically engineered mice, the scientists induced learning and memory deficits by cutting […]

Low Dose Aspirin Could Help Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

On July 2, 2018, The Journal of Neuroscience reported the discovery of an ability of aspirin to decrease amyloid beta plaque in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The presence in the brain of amyloid beta plaques, along with neurofibrillary tangles made up of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, are among the characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Dr Pahan and colleagues determined that aspirin upregulates transcription factor EB (TFEB), a regulator of lysosome formation. “Lysosomes play a central role in cellular homeostasis by regulating the cellular degradative machinery,” lead researcher Kalipada Pahan, PhD, and colleagues explain. “Since aberrant lysosomal function has been associated with […]

A Program To End Alzheimer’s

Almost everyone knows someone who has survived cancer, but until now no one knows anyone who has survived Alzheimer’s Disease. Since it was first described over 100 years ago, Alzheimer’s disease has been without an effective treatment. That may finally be about to change with The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline, a paradigm shifting book by Dale Bredesen, MD, that offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive decline.  Revealing that AD is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three, The End of […]

5 Foods to Prevent Alzheimer’s

This probably isn’t the first time you’ve seen information regarding foods and nutrients to support brain function. And if you Google this topic, you’re likely to wind up with a large number of suggestions. Are all of them accurate? Probably not. However, there is a common thread between of the types of foods that are recommended. Most suggestions include increasing plant-based foods, berries, and green leafy veggies while limiting animal foods and foods high in saturated fat. Since there are many foods that fall into the above categories, we won’t cover them all here. Instead, we’ll focus on a few […]
