Why Aging Makes You Depressed, Fatigued, and Overweight

Serotonin is a compound in the brain that promotes feelings of personal security, relaxation, and confidence. A serotonin deficiency can result in sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and a propensity to overeat, particularly carbohydrates like simple sugars. Startling research reveals that serotonin levels decline as we age! These findings provide a biochemical rationale to explain common age-related disorders such as depressed mood and sleep difficulties. Based on these discoveries, aging people may appreciably improve their health by restoring serotonin to youthful levels. The amino acid tryptophan is needed to produce serotonin in the brain. While the amount of tryptophan in a […]

Can Aging Be Slowed?

Science has not yet found a way to keep us young forever. But there is good news! The latest research on aging reveals that, though we cannot actually stop the ravages of time, we may be able to slow them down. Experts now know that it is not simply inherited genetics that determines who will live the longest in an energetic, disease-free state. By the time humans reach the age of 80, behavioral choices become significant determinants of a person’s overall health and longevity. The article you are about to read examines the mechanisms behind growing old and explains new […]

You’ve likely heard about melatonin.  It’s a supplement that’s been around for a few decades now.  It was originally touted as a cure for jet lag and even everyday insomnia. Diet Could Hold Back Aging

Scientists in the North East may be a step closer to finding a way to slow down the aging process. Newcastle University has identified that damaged protein could be one of the key aspects to premature ageing. A team of experts found that the condition of key proteins in the mitochondria – the “batteries” of cells – could be used to predict, and eventually treat, premature aging. It was established that one way of slowing down the aging process was by restricting diet to reduce the number of calories consumed. A study with mice identified that by using calorie restriction, a […]

Mutations Synergize to Extend Lifespan

An article published in Cell Reports describes the discovery of a significant extension of lifespan in worms known as C. elegans that were engineered to have two mutations linked to a longer life. The genetically modified worms lived up to five times longer than worms without the mutations.
