EWG’s Tap Water Database Drives Research

Since 2005, Environmental Working Group’s Tap Water Database has been the authoritative source for consumers, journalists and researchers who want to know about contaminants in the nation’s drinking water. The latest peer-reviewed study using the database, conducted by the Silent Spring Institute and EWG, found that Hispanic communities are disproportionately exposed to the fertilizer chemical nitrate in their drinking water. EWG’s database shows that nitrate contaminates the public water supplies of almost 1,700 communities at levels that could increase the risk of cancer and harm fetal development. Research by the National Cancer Institute and European studies show that the risk of colorectal cancer is elevated for […]

Cancer-Causing Solvent TCE Taints Tap Water

The chemical is trichloroethylene, or TCE. Under the Trump administration, the Environmental Protection Agency is retreating from an earlier proposal to ban key uses of the chemical, and it is excluding water, air and soil pollution from a safety assessment under the nation’s overhauled toxic chemicals law. Drinking TCE-contaminated water has been linked to liver and kidney damage, and to cancers like leukemia. It has also been […]

The 7 Day Hydrating Meal Plan

It keeps skin looking healthy. Water moisturizes your skin and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss (think free anti-aging cream). In addition, it can keep your skin fresh and smooth. It boosts the immune system. Those who guzzle water are at a lower risk of getting sick. This crystal-clear concoction […]

Fluorinated Chemical Pollution Spreading

WASHINGTON – Two decades after pollution from highly toxic fluorinated chemicals was first reported in American communities and drinking water, the number of known contamination sites is growing rapidly, with no end in sight. The latest update of an interactive map by EWG and the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute at Northeastern University documents publicly known pollution from so-called PFAS chemicals at 94 industrial or military sites in 22 states. When the map was first published 10 months ago, there were 52 known contamination sites in 19 states. The map and accompanying report are the most comprehensive resources tracking PFAS pollution in the U.S. “With […]
