Stress and The “Big 4″ Diseases of Aging

You’ve probably seen those T-shirts that say, Keep Calm, or Stay Calm, and whatever other issue they’re promoting. The other day, I saw an older man walking around the mall who had one on. It read, “Keep Calm and Stay Alive”. I wondered if he knew that health researchers have recently proven how true that simple statement really is. That’s why I want to talk to you about how controlling your stress response can save your health and your life. We’ve talked before about how stress impacts your health. Not good. New Research Offers Hope For Dementia Sufferers

Researchers may have found a way to slow down or prevent memory problems that arise in old age and which can become devastating in patients with dementia. The fresh hope comes from a series of studies in humans and mice that identified a protein which causes memory impairment when it builds up in the blood and brain with age. Scientists found that injections of the protein made young animals’ memories worse and reduced the growth of new neurons in their brains. Further studies showed that blocking the protein prevented memory loss in older animals, making them smarter than untreated animals […]

Fight Skin Aging with Coffee Extracts

While various factors influence skin aging (including stress and environmental pollutants), long-term sunlight exposure is a primary environmental accelerator. As you grow older, your face is the first area to exhibit the visible effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, also known as photoaging, with the manifestation of fine lines, wrinkles, loose and dry skin, and discoloration. These unsightly changes reflect the deteriorating condition of the components that make up the inner layer of the skin, the dermis. This extracellular matrix is a combination of the fibrous proteins collagen and elastin, along with water-binding glycosaminoglycans. Together, these substances form a strong and resilient framework of connective tissue that gives […]

Living Longer: Can the Future Be Bright?

The Twentieth Century gave us quite a gift: an average of 30 more years of life then people had in the previous century. What to do with all those extra years of living? In A Long Bright Future, Laura Carstensen, the founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, has envisioned a new approach to life, one that allows us to put to best use the extra years we have gained. She calls for nothing less than a major re-envisioning of our life cycle, one that allows for more flexibility and leisure throughout our younger years and a more active, […]
