Probiotics May Relieve Depression

Probiotics, which are typically known for their effects on the digestive tract, are becoming a hot topic in the field of psychology. Previous research shows a potential role in alleviating anxiety. And now, a recent study suggests that probiotics may even help to alleviate depression. The results were published in the journal, Brain, Behavior, and Immunity. Probiotics Reduce Sad Thoughts Rumination, which is the repetition of negative thoughts, is a risk factor for depression. Scientists from the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition wanted to investigate if probiotics could play a role in the treatment of the disease. For the […]

Huffington Post Praises Moringa and FoodTrients

Darryle Pollack, author, artist, cancer survivor and writer for the Huffington Post, recently praised the positive effects of moringa that she learned about after meeting Grace O and reading up on the miracle plant on FoodTrients.com in The Age GRACEfully Cookbook. Almost unknown in the United States, its popularity is growing worldwide thanks to what many believe are its health benefits — ranging from boosting immunity, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, controlling blood pressure, blood sugar, increasing breast milk, even headache relief. “With a boost from Grace O’s culinary creativity, moringa could soon become a household word,” says Darryle in her […]

Is Eating Too Much Meat Bad for Your Health?

WASHINGTON – The federal government’s new Dietary Guidelines miss a key opportunity to steer Americans toward a diet that is healthier and better for the environment by not clearly recommending that people reduce their meat consumption, says EWG Research Analyst Emily Cassidy: The new 2015 Dietary Guidelines should have clearly called on consumers to eat less meat – both to protect their health and to reduce the harm that meat production does to the environment. Producing meat is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, and growing the feed for livestock is a leading cause of farm runoff that pollutes […]

FDA Bans 3 Toxic Chemicals From Food Wrapping

WASHINGTON – Under pressure from EWG and other environmental and health groups, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is banning three grease-resistant chemical substances linked to cancer and birth defects from use in pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, sandwich wrappers and other food packaging. The FDA’s belated action comes more than a decade after EWG and other advocates sounded alarms and five years after U.S. chemical companies stopped making the chemicals. It does nothing to prevent food processors and packagers from using almost 100 related chemicals that may also be hazardous. “Industrial chemicals that pollute people’s blood clearly have no […]

Here we go again, anticipating another holiday season.  I can’t help but ask where did the time go?  Is it just me or are you all feeling the same way?  Seems I was just writing about how to set goals for the New Year and in a blink another year has slipped away. I always tell myself that next year will be different.  I’ll slow down my pace for working, running, and doing so I can embrace all the precious moments the holiday season brings.   Yet somehow, I’m right back in the same place wondering how in the world will […]

GMO Salmon Approval Backlash

WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration’s decision to approve genetically modified salmon will still leave consumers in the dark about what’s in their food, underscoring the need for a mandatory, national GMO labeling requirement, The Environmental Working Group (EWG) said today. “Foods with genetically modified ingredients line the shelves of our supermarket aisles, and today the federal government gave the green light to the first GMO salmon,” said Colin O’Neil, EWG’s director of agriculture policy. “Yet we will still have no way of knowing whether what we’re eating has been genetically modified.” The salmon is the first GMO animal […]

The Health Benefits of Sage

The word “sage” brings to mind an elderly dispenser of wisdom, the fragrant brush of a desert landscape, or perhaps “smudging” — a Native American ritual involving burning dry, bundled herbs, which is said to benefit a location’s energy. However, sage is most commonly known as a seasoning used to flavor holiday stuffing or brewed on its own as tea. Sage (Salvia officinalis) takes its name from the Latin word salvere, which means “to save,” referring to the herb’s healing powers. Common sage has a number of documented beneficial properties, not limited to those of an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial. Sage […]
