The Sardinian Diet: These Foods May Increase Your Lifespan

In Loma Linda, Calif., a community of Seventh Day Adventists has a life expectancy that’s nine to 11 years greater than that of other Americans. Another Blue Zone is Sardinia, Italy.  The Sardinan’s credit three very interesting food staples to good health and a longer life. Can The Sardinian Diet Increase Your Lifespan? If I tell you about cannonau, cazu marzu, pecorino sardo or carta musica, and how they could extend your lifespan by 6, maybe even 10, years, would you know what I was talking about?  Not likely, unless you’re a Sardinian who’s familiar with the typical diet eaten in this Italian-island culture off […]

Is Cooking With Aluminum Pans A Health Risk?

In the last several years, more information has surfaced about the safety of chemicals used to create Teflon (PTFE) and other non-stick surface coated pans.  It was found that with use, scraping food with utensils could cause tiny flecks of these chemical-based surfaces to get into your food.  Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had deemed that ingesting small particles of these pan surfaces has not been shown to cause any real health problems, many of my patients decided to throw out their non-stick cookware and switch back to cast iron or aluminum. Cast iron cookware has been around […]

Your Diet Can Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer

Many doctors, like myself, take a more holistic approach and are far more aware of the link between their patient’s diets and the type of diseases they are at risk for. As I tell my patients, a healthy diet can greatly reduce their risk for the 3 biggest health concerns that face Americans today, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. With that in mind, I’d like to share with you some specific diet information that I give my patients to reduce their risk for cancer. Change Your Plate, Boost Your Health First, you need to re-think the distribution of the amount […]

Liquid Nutrition Drinks Cashing in on You?

There are several commercials on television right now extolling the virtues of liquid nutrition drinks and their important role in senior health.  These nutritional drinks can help boost necessary protein intake as well as other crucial vitamins and minerals.  But, do you really need to buy these expensive bottled drinks to ensure your health? I don’t think so and I’d like to offer a more economical solution. Liquid Nutrition Drinks:  Do You Really Need Them? On today’s market, there are several nutrition drinks out there aimed at seniors and those with diabetes – namely Boost, Ensure and Glucerna.  With the […]

The Power of Positive Thinking on Your Health

You’ve likely heard the old Ben Franklin adage, “You are what you eat.”  Turns out, that Mr. Franklin was correct about that – what you feed your body becomes your body.  Eat good food and you’ll have good health.  Well, the same thing applies to your thoughts.  Many medical researchers now believe that your thoughts have much more power over your health than you know.  These researchers believe, as I do, that your mind is the “master” that programs your body to act and re-act.  So, if you want to have better health, or a better life, you can use this mind-over-body […]

Raspberry Ketones Help Fat Cells Shrink

In the last couple of months, several of my patients have asked me about using raspberries for weight loss. It’s true that ‘raspberry ketones’ has been a popular buzz phrase on television and the Internet as a substance that can, reportedly, actually force your fat cells to shrink and help you lose weight. Raspberries have always been considered a good addition to any weight loss program, as they are high in antioxidants, low in calories and sugar per 4 ounce serving.  However, you’d have to eat about 90 lbs of them to get the concentration of raspberry ketones these products offer.  After a […]

Drinking Soda: Do Things Really Go Better?

Pop, soda, or soda pop, whichever name you prefer, let’s face it, is an American icon. I, like many of my patients, grew up with it and couldn’t get enough of that ice cold blast of sugary delight hitting the back of my dry throat after playing outside on a hot summer day. Who can forget all those rainbow colored, knee-high glass bottles of soda with the delicious fruity names and flavors? Years ago, soda was considered a once in a while treat. Today, it’s become a staple in our refrigerators. Americans consume an incredible 160 gallons of soda a […]
