The Top Anti-Cancer Foods

I have long believed that people can transform their health with the foods they eat. I encourage patients with a wide array of conditions to examine their diets in addition to using traditional treatments and medicines. For some, adopting a healthy diet full of produce, whole grains and lean protein can improve symptoms through weight loss. For people with certain diseases, choosing foods with unique, wellness-promoting qualities can provide a major boost to their health. For those seeking to actively prevent cancer, the foods you eat can bring big health benefits. Countless studies have been done on the effects of […]

Apple Compound Helps Prevent Obesity in Mice

Researchers at the University of Iowa have found a positive effect for ursolic acid, found in apple peel, on preventing weight gain in mice. The findings were reported online on June 20, 2012 in the journal PLoS ONE. Associate professor of internal medicine Christopher Adams, MD, PhD and his colleagues fed mice a high fat diet and gave half of the animals ursolic acid for six weeks. Although the mice that received ursolic acid consumed more food than those that did not receive the compound, they gained less weight by the end of the treatment period. They also had greater skeletal […]

How DHA Helps the Brain

In an article published online on June 20, 2012 in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton provide an explanation for the ability of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, found in oily fish and algae) to support memory. A team led by Yves Sauve, who is a member of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, divided ten mice to receive a diet supplemented with DHA or an unsupplemented diet.  Animals that received DHA-enhanced diets were found to have a 29 percent higher level of DHA in the brain’s […]

New Water Study Results From Murad Research Labs Busts “Eight Glasses a Day” Myth

Initial results from a scientific study on water consumption and cellular dehydration conducted at the Murad Research Labs in El Segundo, California, have uncovered surprising results, dramatically challenging and debunking the ages-old notion that everyone should drink “eight glasses of water per day.” In an ongoing effort to gather and analyze data pertaining to healthy living, researchers at the Murad Research Labs, directed by Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, measured the intracellular water levels of 104 women, revealing that those who regularly drink 7-8 cups of water per day actually have a lower average intracellular water level than those subjects who […]

Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day?

Author Jonathon Goldstein once said, “Everyone runs around trying to find a place where they still serve breakfast because eating breakfast, even if it’s 5 o’clock in the afternoon, is a sign that the day has just begun and good things can still happen. Having lunch is like throwing in the towel.” Maybe for many of us breakfast represents that “new day dawning” attitude, but is there really something more to it — physiologically speaking? There’s no doubt that one of the most popular statements ever made in nutrition and medicine is that breakfast is the most important meal of […]

New Breast Cancer Research Explained

A new study on Breast Cancer is now available. According to news originating from Barcelona, Spain, by NewsRx correspondents, research stated, “Aromatase inhibitor (AI)-related bone loss is associated with increased fracture rates. Vitamin D might play a role in minimising this effect.” Our news journalists obtained a quote from the research from IMIM, “We hypothesised that 25-hydroxy-vitamin D concentrations [25(OH)D] after 3 months supplementation might relate to bone loss after 1 year on AI therapy. We conducted a prospective cohort study from January 2006 to December 2011 of a consecutive sample of women initiating AI […]
