How Calorie Restriction Works

In an article published on September 14, 2017 in Nature Communications, Temple University researchers reveal an explanation for the life extending effect of calorie restriction. Jean-Pierre J. Isaa, MD, and colleagues discovered that restricting the amount of calories consumed slows the aging-related rate of change of the epigenome, which consists of proteins and other compounds that can attach to DNA and control its action. The team is also the first to demonstrate that the rate of epigenomic change is associated with lifespan. “Our study shows that epigenetic drift, which is characterized by gains and losses in DNA methylation in the genome over […]

Salt Is a Must-Have, But How Much?

Common salt is in fact a bit more complex than many people think it is. Table salt with iodine, Himalayan salt, Sea salt – what’s the difference? Crucial for life because of its role in nerve and muscle function as well as in fluid and electrolyte balance, salt is a must-have. But in the modern diet we often focus on restriction because intake is generally high. It wasn’t always that way. Whole, natural, unprocessed food is very low in sodium and well balanced with potassium found in fresh produce. Early humans and those without access to processed foods may have […]

9 Easy Tips To Maintain Bone Density

By Jenny Ivy Second only to teeth, bones are your body’s strongest material. And even though they’re solid, bones are dynamic, living tissue, made mostly from collagen and calcium phosphate, a mineral that hardens bone exterior. But as you age, existing bone density breaks down faster than new bone is made, increasing risk of osteoporosis, a condition that reduces bone density and raises chance of fractures. Stay strong with naturally minded advice from a physical therapist (Marilyn Moffat, PT, New York University, New York), a nutritionist (Ann Gibson, CHHC, founder, AdventureWellness.com, Boulder, Colorado), and a naturopathic doctor (Justin Pollack, ND, […]

The Salad Bar: Diet Friend Or Foe

Let’s say you’ve just spent a long day at the office. You feel exhausted, and you barely have the energy to think about what to eat for dinner, let alone do the actual cooking. If you are like most Americans, you will pick up fast food on the way home or pile your family in the car and head for the nearest restaurant. Let’s be honest—we are all busy during the week, and preparing a balanced meal at home every night simply isn’t possible. Takeout and restaurant meals are a modern fact of life, but there’s no reason that regularly […]

Calorie Restricted Diet Rejuvenates Biologic Clock

The August 10, 2017 issue of Cell reported an ability for calorie restriction to prevent the impact of aging on circadian rhythms. “The process of aging and circadian rhythms are intimately intertwined, but how peripheral clocks involved in metabolic homeostasis contribute to aging remains unknown,” the authors write in their introductory remarks. For the current investigation, researchers at the University of California, Irvine fed calorie restricted or unrestricted diets to young and old mice. At 6 and 18 months, liver tissue samples were analyzed. Although calorie restriction did not affect the 24-hour cycle of the older group’s circadian-controlled metabolic system, older cells showed signs […]

Proven Anti-Aging Benefits Of A Low-Calorie Diet

As a doctor, one of the most important parts of my job is to help people enjoy a higher quality of life and live long. And as an anti-aging doctor, I would like nothing better than for all my patients and readers to live to their 100th birthday. Recently there’s been a lot of discussion about slowing the aging process down through a calorie-restricted diet. And the preliminary research about this calorie-restricted dieting suggests that it may be the most promising strategy to increase longevity. Now, a calorie-restricted diet doesn’t mean you cut back your food intake by just a […]

These 2 Popular Foods May Cause You To Gain Weight

These Popular Foods May Be Sabotaging Your Weight Loss One of the important health issues of getting older is weight management.  If you’re overweight in middle age, your chances of developing serious disease – like diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer – are greater.  And, like most people over 50, you may have been struggling with maintaining a normal weight or trying to lose some. If you’re still working, or just too busy to make meals at home regularly, like many of my patients you may be eating at a fast food restaurant several days a week.  You might stop […]
