The Sardinian Diet: These Foods May Increase Your Lifespan

In Loma Linda, Calif., a community of Seventh Day Adventists has a life expectancy that’s nine to 11 years greater than that of other Americans. Another Blue Zone is Sardinia, Italy.  The Sardinan’s credit three very interesting food staples to good health and a longer life. Can The Sardinian Diet Increase Your Lifespan? If I tell you about cannonau, cazu marzu, pecorino sardo or carta musica, and how they could extend your lifespan by 6, maybe even 10, years, would you know what I was talking about?  Not likely, unless you’re a Sardinian who’s familiar with the typical diet eaten in this Italian-island culture off […]

Vitamin D Levels Higher In Exercisers

The April 1, 2017 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism published the finding of researchers at Johns Hopkins University of a correlation between increased physical activity and higher levels of vitamin D. Higher levels of vitamin D and exercise was also associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The study included 10,342 men and women who were free of coronary heart disease and heart failure upon enrollment in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study between 1987 to 1989. Physical activity levels were assessed during follow-up visits that took place over a 19.3-year period. Stored serum samples […]

Are You Game to Try Exotic Meats?

Our Stone Age (Paleolithic) ancestors subsisted on whatever they could catch, gather, pluck or hunt. Animals that they caught for food were naturally grass fed, lean and high in omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins and cancer-fighting selenium, yet low in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. Much of today’s “factory farmed” animals for food are fed grain and pumped with antibiotics, steroids and growth hormones, all of which can be toxic in certain amounts. Eating wild game is a delicious experience. Meats like venison, elk, bison, wild boar, rabbit and ostrich are highly flavorful, lean and full of FoodTrients. Here are just […]

Your Diet Can Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer

Many doctors, like myself, take a more holistic approach and are far more aware of the link between their patient’s diets and the type of diseases they are at risk for. As I tell my patients, a healthy diet can greatly reduce their risk for the 3 biggest health concerns that face Americans today, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Change Your Plate, Boost Your Health First, you need to re-think the distribution of the amount […]

Constipated? What To Eat & What To Avoid

Constipation is an unspoken discomfort most people will experience at some point in their lives. It is a symptom, in fact, that appears for many different reasons but is not a disease on its own. Slow transit of stool can be caused by medications, health conditions, a sedentary lifestyle, hydration status, hormonal shifts and certain foods. Constipation strikes women more often than men; they are at 2.5 times more likely to report this symptom. Constipation can be cured or lessened with natural remedies including food and certain types of activity. Constipation can be different for each person but generally means […]

A Healthy Thyroid Is Important

You probably don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that helps regulate metabolism, heart rate, energy levels and body temperature. But thyroid disorders are very common. It’s estimated that 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and as many as 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition. Thyroid disorders can mimic several other health conditions, making them more difficult to diagnose. If you even suspect you might have a thyroid problem, consult with your primary care physician or endocrinologist as soon as possible. The most common […]

Paleo Diet: What It Is and How it Can Benefit You

Did you know that you’re, basically, still a “cave” man or woman? And that if you ate the kind of diet your ancient ancestors did you’d be healthier, look younger, have more muscle mass, more energy and live longer? You may be knitting your eyebrows wondering if all that’s too good to be true, but let me explain why it is. The Paleo-Diet Helps You Lose Weight, Stay Younger and Healthier Even in our technologically advanced age in 2013, the human body is, however, not as advanced.  Your body is, basically, still the same old model humans had during the Paleolithic […]

Fatigue? Might Need More Than A Nap

Falling asleep during conference calls or snatching siestas several times a day may be a sign of nutrient deficiency, and could lead to more serious consequences than being caught snoozing on the conference line, notes a recent U.S. News & World Report article. “Fatigue can be like an early warning sign of potentially more severe problems down the road if you don’t recognize and treat the problem causing the fatigue,” Dr. Anthony Komaroff, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a senior physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said in the story. The top deficiencies that […]
