How To Eat To Avoid Acne

Acne is the bane of adolescence. It can make a self-conscious teenager feel even more insecure. For decades, dermatologists insisted that diet didn’t matter. Sometimes they cautioned against high-fat foods like milkshakes, but more often the dermatology dogma was that there was no relationship between what you ate and how your face looked (Clinical Dermatology, September-October 2004; Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, June 2005). It turns out that they were wrong on both counts. Research now shows that diet does matter and also that low-fat dairy products are worse than full fat when it comes to complexion. Starting around […]

Reduce Heart Attacks By Eating Dinner Earlier

Q: Our family tends to eat dinner later in the evening, but a friend who knows our habits told me she heard this increases the chances for a heart attack. Is she right or did she misunderstand something? Theresa Schulte, of O’Fallon A: Eating a major meal within two hours of bedtime could indeed have far worse consequences than a midnight run for the Rolaids, according to a new study recently released at the world’s largest heart conference. Blood pressure usually drops by at least 10 percent when a person goes to sleep, allowing the body to rest. But this […]

Grace O’s Recipes Have To Pass Test

By Grace O After I’ve added nutrient-dense, anti-aging ingredients, it’s time to test and re-test the recipe until it has the perfect balance of flavors, textures, and colors. I think it’s important for food to look good, have an interesting texture, whether smooth or crunchy or a combination thereof, and be balanced in acidity and spice. I like to have a mix of recipes that, when served together in one meal, tingle all of the taste categories: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (an earthy flavor). Then each recipe is tested by my FoodTrients team and has received a nutritionist’s […]

Why Quality Ingredients Matter

I try to use organic produce and non GMO products as much as possible. I particularly pay attention to the Environmental Working Group’s list Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen Produce Guides available on EWG.org. Certain fruits and vegetables, like strawberries, tomatoes and apples have higher concentrations of pesticides so if you can buy them organically grown, it’s better for you.  Do your own homework and learn more to protect yourself and your family. To reduce your exposure to pesticides, the EWG recommends buying organic whenever you can. But we all know that organics are not always accessible or affordable for […]

5 Steps for Perfect Meal Portions

With the recent rise in number of people who are becoming more health conscious, it seems as though this task is simultaneously becoming more difficult. Granted, many brands and restaurants are offering “healthier” options, but one of the largest problems for our waistlines and health still persists…the size of our meals. Our collective idea of what is a “normal” portion is getting to be larger each year…it’s nearly impossible to dine out where the meal served is actually one serving, or to find an individually wrapped snack that is truly for only one individual. However, bigger is not always better […]

General Mills To Disclose GMOs

FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016 WASHINGTON – Reacting to the news that General Mills plans to disclose the presence of GMOs in its products, Scott Faber, EWG’s senior vice president of government affairs, said today: EWG applauds General Mills for disclosing the presence of GMOs on its products. Nine out of ten Americans want the right to know whether their food contains GMOs – just like consumers in 64 other nations. Like General Mills, we hope Congress will craft a national GMO labeling solution and welcome the opportunity to work with industry to find a solution that works for consumers and […]

Natural Products Expo: Where the Elite Eats Meet!

The determined FoodTrients team took on legendary Southern California traffic, parking lots filled to capacity by 8:00 a.m., and the threat of a monsoon-like storm to visit and evaluate a million square feet of exhibit space at this year’s Natural Products Expo West at the Anaheim Convention Center, in the shadow of Disneyland. This is the largest natural products trade show in the world and this year’s event broke records—again! There were more than 3,000 exhibitors and over 77,000 registered attendees—up 6.9% over last year. This included 600 first-time exhibitors. Besides its enormous size, the most notable characteristic of this […]
