Confused About CBD? Here’s a Primer

Cannabidiol, or CBD oil, is a new buzzword that you may be hearing. Its properties are suggested to treat a variety of ailments and illnesses, but what, exactly, is CBD oil? Here’s what one CBD ‘expert’ (aka, the Delicious Living Supplements Editor) has to say on the subject: Let’s start with the cannabis plant, or specifically the Cannabis sativa species. Both marijuana and hemp come from a Cannabis sativa plant—just different parts. Some Cannabis sativa is grown and bred for its THC. THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is an active constituent (a cannabinoid) of the cannabis plant that contains psychoactive properties (aka: the part that can get you high). Some Cannabis sativa, on […]

Our diet has a huge effect on our brain and our mental wellbeing, even protecting against dementia. So, what should be on the menu? Like our bodies, our brains have very specific food requirements. Gut Balance: The Secret to Weight Loss?

More than two thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Why? The conventional explanation is too much food and too little exercise, but new thinking about the causes of overweight and obesity suggests that something else is at work. Research shows that gut microflora and intestinal microbiota play a pivotal role in weight maintenance through its influence on metabolism, appetite regulation, energy expenditure, and endocrine regulation. Gut flora imbalance is why so many people can’t lose weight despite exercising more and eating less. In The Gut Balance Revolution, author Gerard Mullin, M.D. —the foremost authority on […]

Hops: For Anxiety, Sleep, and More?

When you think of hops you may think first of beer – a main reason that we grow this crop. But these climbing vines native to Eurasia and North America have a rich history of medicinal use as well. In fact, hops are related to the cannabis plant; they even have some similarities in flavor and aroma. How Young Do You Feel?

Research reported on August 9 at the 2018 convention of the American Psychological Association suggests that subjective age—how old we feel at a given time—could be shaped by the level of control we believe to have over our own lives. “Research suggests that a younger subjective age, or when people feel younger than their chronological age, is associated with a variety of positive outcomes in older individuals, including better memory performance, health and longevity,” stated presenter Jennifer Bellingtier, PhD, of Friedrich Schiller University in Germany. “Our research suggests that subjective age changes on a daily basis and older adults feel significantly […]

Is Your Health Worth 42 Minutes of Your Day?

If you’re a postmenopausal gal, you’ve likely put on a few pounds as a result.  If you’re like most women your age, you probably gained it around your belly, hips, and thighs, maybe even your breasts, where women carry most of their fat cells.  You don’t like the way the excess fat makes you look, but to me, the more important issue is the health issues the extra fat can bring.  Let me tell you about those risks and what new research says will help you get rid of it. Researchers out of Canada’s Alberta Health Services have concluded that […]

Cancer-Causing Solvent TCE Taints Tap Water

Tap water supplies for more than 14 million Americans are contaminated with a cancer-causing industrial solvent made notorious by the book and film “A Civil Action,” according to an Environmental Working Group investigation released today. The chemical is trichloroethylene, or TCE. Under the Trump administration, the Environmental Protection Agency is retreating from an earlier proposal to ban key uses of the chemical, and it is excluding water, air and soil pollution from a safety assessment under the nation’s overhauled toxic chemicals law. Drinking TCE-contaminated water has been linked to liver and kidney damage, and to cancers like leukemia. It has also been […]

Eat to the Beat of Caribbean Superfoods!

The Caribbean is blessed in so many ways. There is the famous weather, which is warm and sunny during the winter when most of North America is shivering, and the gorgeous turquoise water and sugary white (or sometimes pink!) sands with Calypso music wafting. What I love about the Caribbean is the blend of cultures, which gives richness to the language, traditions and especially the food. There are influences from every civilization, East and West, that ever set foot on these island gems — from the indigenous Amerindian people, who were followed by British, Spanish, French and Dutch explorers, to […]
