Apple Sage Cauliflower

Do I Need to Detox?

My birthday falls on December 31, so often I throw lavish parties on New Year’s Eve. I book a banquet room in an upscale hotel; order a rich, multicourse menu for about 100 people; and end the night with a spectacular dessert buffet. I don’t drink alcohol, but I make sure that the Champagne is free-flowing for my guests. So we tend to overdo it. And the next day I always think about detoxification. Sometimes I’ll even book some time at a health spa to recover from all the indulging I’ve done over the holidays. Why is detoxifying important? Alcohol […]

David Getoff Speaks About Detoxification

David Getoff, a certified Clinical Nutritionist and the Vice President of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, spoke at the 47th annual Cancer Convention at the Glendale Hilton. He took the audience through the proper steps of detoxification. Most of us need to remove or reduce poisons that have built up in our bodies over time from exposure to new carpeting, chlorinated water, fluoride in toothpaste, and aluminum salts in anti-perspirant, not to mention from eating foods treated with pesticides, meat from animals given antibiotics, fish with high mercury levels, corn that’s been genetically modified, and drinking diet drinks with aspartame or […]

Atchara Pickle

When I was a teenager, my mom and I would make atchara together. Atchara is a sweet-and-sour pickle made with green, unripe papayas and other vegetables. My mom would make florets out of a few carrots because they added beauty and color to the pickle. Eaten with grilled pork or fried fish, it’s considered a national dish of the Philippines. In America, I eat it with BBQ, grilled meat, and smoked fish. Papayas contain papain, an enzyme that helps break down proteins. This is why I sometimes use green papaya as a meat tenderizer. (There is less papain in ripe […]

3 Key Detox Facts from Nutrition Experts

By Lisa Truesdale To prepare for her role in the movie Dreamgirls (2006), Beyoncé turned to the Master Cleanse method to flush out her system and slim down; she reportedly dropped 20 pounds by forgoing solid foods and consuming only a lemonade- like drink (with maple syrup and cayenne) for 10 days.
