Ikarian Walnut Pesto

The region of Ikaria, Greece, is a Blue Zone, meaning some of the world’s longest-living people live there. Ikarian Greeks include walnuts in their diet, and it’s no wonder many of them live well past the age of 100! Walnuts are one of the best foods for you because of their many nutritional qualities. In this pesto, the light, fresh flavor of the celery leaves goes well with the rich flavor of the walnuts. Just buy a bunch of celery with plenty of leaves still on the stalks. If you can’t find enough celery leaves, you can use stemmed watercress […]

Home-Smoked Fish

This recipe uses a procedure that allows you to create smoked fish at home without using a smoker. Though it takes approximately 6 hours to brine, marinate, and bake the fish, it does not require considerable effort. The secret ingredient is hickory-flavored liquid smoke. Leaving the bones in the fish keeps it firm while it’s “smoking.” Serves 4-6 Ingredients 4 lb. fresh trout, salmon, or mackerel, cleaned and gutted 1 cup kosher salt dissolved in 4 cups water 1 cup olive oil 1⁄4 cup hickory-flavored liquid smoke Lemon slices as garnish Rock salt (optional) Fresh herbs (optional)   Procedures Leave […]

Feeling frisky and ready for romance?  Well, I have a few good suggestions for foods that are not only good for you but also tasty treats that will enhance any night (or day) of romance. In my observation, there are several categories of foods that qualify as “romantic,” or enhance a romantic moment. Or moist, voluptuous foods like oysters and figs. Then there are the foods that provide so much nutrition and feeling of well-being […]

Buckwheat Crepes Take Veggies to New Heights

Vegetarian Buckwheat Crepes Full of gut-healthy fiber, vitamins, and minerals, buckwheat is a grain that is too often overlooked. Most people have never cooked with it or encountered it in restaurants. Immunity Boosting Blend with Strawberries

This blended drink helps with your immunity, gut health, and even detoxification. Yogurt has probiotics which keep the good bacteria in your intestines flourishing. This is important because the intestinal tract is a main component of your body’s immune system. Strawberries are very high in vitamin C, a known immunity booster. Limes also have vitamin C and the acid from their juice helps the stomach break down food. Certain flavanoids in limes help detox the body and act as anti-bacterial agents. In some countries limes are used as a natural antibiotic. The carrot juice (or orange juice) provides beta-carotene which […]

Thai Shrimp & Pineapple Bowl

This curry is delicious over white or black rice. I use monk fruit sweetener to reduce the impact cane or beet sugar can have on your blood glucose levels. Monk fruit also has NO CALORIES, and it’s completely natural. You can use coconut sugar instead, but like cane sugar, it will impact your blood sugar and is caloric. Benefits: Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion by breaking down proteins. Coconut milk contains some medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are broken down more easily by the body, as well as the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral lauric acid. Serves 4 […]
