Take the Strong Path To Aging Better
What is sarcopenia? The term “sarcopenia” was invented recently by Irwin Rosenberg. In 1989, he first referred to loss of skeletal muscle mass and size as “sarcopenia,” by combining the Greek word for “flesh” (Sarx) with the Greek word for “loss” (penia). At the time, it was thought that the degenerative process being described was led by the loss of lean muscle mass with aging. Today, it is understood that inactivity causes muscles to lose strength through a process of denervation, the loss of nerve supply that signals muscle cells to act. It impacts all of us as we age, […]READ MORE

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies issued the following news release: For hundreds of years, healers in Sao Tome e Principe–an island off the western coast of Africa–have prescribed cata-manginga leaves and bark to their patients. These pickings from the Voacanga africana tree are said to decrease inflammation and ease the symptoms of mental disorders. Now, scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have discovered that the power of the plant isn’t just folklore: a compound isolated from Voacanga africana protects cells from altered molecular pathways linked to Alzheimer’s disease (http://www.salk.edu/ra/alzheimers_and_aging.html), Parkinson’s disease and the neurodegeneration that often follows a stroke. “What this provides us with […]

I saw a patient the other day who complained of feeling tired all the time. He also said he was getting sick more lately and even when he was well he didn’t really feel good. I suspected immediately that he was suffering from an overworked liver. The symptoms of an overworked liver mimic many other conditions. Thyroid problems, autoimmune disorders, hormone imbalances, and chronic diseases all have similar symptoms, especially in the early stages. Once, I had ruled these out, I was certain the problem lay with the liver. Liver exhaustion leads to a build up of toxins in your […]

By Amy Sawelson Yes, it is! And now we have the science to prove it. A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that organic crops have higher concentrations of antioxidants, lower levels of cadmium and nitrates and fewer pesticide residues than non-organic crops.

A review and meta-analyses reported online on July 22, 2014 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism affirmed an association between deficient levels of vitamin D and a greater risk of schizophrenia, a devastating and disabling brain disorder. “This is the first comprehensive meta-analysis to study the relationship between the two conditions,” announced coauthor Ahmad Esmaillzadeh, PhD, of the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. “When we examined the findings of several observational studies on vitamin D and schizophrenia, we found people with schizophrenia have lower vitamin D levels than healthy people. Vitamin D deficiency is quite common among people […]

Many of my over-40 male patients are concerned that they are losing muscle mass and ask me if there are any special exercises they can do to keep their muscles strong. Yes, there are many strength and muscle mass-building methods that can be done in a gym, or at home, with specific weight training. In addition, one of the first things I tell my patients about maintaining and building muscle mass is to spend a little time in the kitchen! No, not weight training with the appliances, rather, spending some time preparing the correct type of foods that will help you […]

The most significant anti-aging discovery in history was made in 1935. In that year, rats fed a calorie restricted diet achieved radically-extended mean and maximum life spans, along with a delayed onset of age-related diseases. Since this finding was published 75 years ago, dozens of experiments in mammals have validated that undernutrition without malnutrition induces profound anti-aging effects. Not only do calorie restricted animals live much longer, but they remain far healthier than normally-fed controls. When a group of humans consumed a similar calorie restricted diet, their conventional blood markers of aging (excess glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL) plummeted to much lower levels. In the most significant finding to date, two groups of […]

A new study has revealed that eating probiotics regularly might help improve blood pressure. Probiotics are live microorganisms (naturally occurring bacteria in the gut) thought to have beneficial effects; common sources are yogurt or dietary supplements. The researchers found that probiotic consumption lowered systolic blood pressure (the top number) by an average 3.56 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) by an average 2.38 mm Hg, compared to adults who didn’t consume probiotics. The positive effects from probiotics on diastolic blood pressure were greatest in people whose blood pressure was equal to or greater than 130/85, […]

If you love coffee like I do, you wouldn’t think of starting your day without a cup or two of your favorite coffee. Like me, it helps your brain wake up, helps you think more clearly, and helps you get on your way for the day. But did you know that drinking coffee regularly has another really important benefit – especially as you get older? As amazing as that sounds, a recent study out of Cornell University proved it to be true. Researchers found that drinking a daily cup of coffee can help prevent vision damage, especially the type that […]

Bloating, burping, sour taste in your mouth, and stomach or chest pains, these are some of the frequent complaints that bring patients to my office. If you are one of the approximately 60 million Americans who suffer from heartburn, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The horrible burning sensation in the middle of your chest is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It occurs when hydrochloric acid backs up into your esophagus, which is the tube between your mouth and stomach. Don’t ignore your symptoms of GERD. If they last more than two weeks, you should see your doctor. Left untreated, GERD […]

Within the last couple of decades, significant strides have not been made in the field of pancreatic cancer. To date, the best treatment option (if diagnosed early) is a surgery called the Whipple Procedure which was developed in the 1930s. With few treatments on the horizon, it makes sense to seek alternatives. One nutrient which seems promising is curcumin. In an animal study, it significantly decreased the size of pancreatic tumors. Curcumin Reduced the Size of Tumors by 42% Curcumin is extracted from an Indian spice called turmeric. It is one of the most important anti-cancer nutrients studied today. Over 2,000 published studies show […]
