California Persimmon Cookies

SERVES 12 This recipe comes from our FoodTrients friend Lisa. It was her grandmother’s recipe and a family favorite. She uses persimmons grown in sunny California. Persimmons were brought there from Asia in the 1800s and can be found in many suburban California backyards. Fuyu persimmons work best in this recipe because they’re softer than Hachiya persimmons. Be sure to use very ripe ones so they’re soft enough and have lost their astringency. BENEFITS Persimmons contain carotenoids, which may help inhibit cancer and tumor growth, reduce the risk of heart disease, and support immune function. The resveratrol in raisins helps […]

Shrimp and Grapefruit Salad

Shrimp and Grapefruit Salad Pink grapefruit and shrimp come together nicely in this salad thanks to a rich, tangy buttermilk dressing. You can use white grapefruit, but you will lose some of the health benefits of pink grapefruit. Pink grapefruit is full of healthful compounds—anthocyanins, flavanoids, lycopene, polyphenols, quercetin, sulfur compounds, and vitamin C—that provide loads of antioxidant power for promoting artery and heart health and protecting against sun damage and skin aging. The shrimp offer heart-healthy Omega-3s and selenium and zinc, both of which help maintain a robust immune system. Serves 4 Ingredients 1 lb. tiger shrimp 1 Tbs. […]

Antioxidants Help Slow Down Premature Aging

Antioxidants have multiple roles in the body and one of the most studied is the ability to reduce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a natural process and a result of cells doing their jobs, whether that is creating energy, detoxifying the body, digesting food, breathing, thinking, or exercising. If the balance of oxidative stress gets too high it can cause damage to cells. This is where antioxidants come in; they protect your cells, preventing and repairing damage caused by oxidative stress. This balance is what keeps cells healthy and prevents damage that comes along naturally with living and aging. The […]

Tropical Grilled Chicken with Mango-Habanero Salsa

Chicken breasts are the perfect vehicle for zesty tropical flavors. Calamansi is a citrus hybrid also known as Philippine lime. It’s popular in Asian (especially Southeast Asian, Malaysian, and Indonesian) cuisines. If you can’t find it in an Asian market, you can use more traditional limes or lime juice. My Tropical Mango Habanero Salsa is not just good with chips, it’s also delicious over grilled chicken (or even steak or shrimp). You can serve this dish alongside my Jamaican Rice with Curried Corn, which is another delicious recipe in my new cookbook, Anti-Aging Dishes from Around the […]
