As families look for easy-to-prepare and affordable sources of protein, soyfoods are increasingly in the spotlight. Your body will never waste a calorie. Each calorie is either burned for energy or stored for later use. Calories come in three forms, which are the macromolecules of human nutrition: fat, protein and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are interesting. The basic building block of all carbohydrates, whether simple or complex, is a single sugar molecule called glucose. This means that all carbohydrates, from whole grains to table sugar, will eventually break down into a single glucose molecule. Men who do not smoke and eat a lot of soy may have a lower risk of lung cancer, according to a new study. Soy contains is flavones, which act similarly to the hormone estrogens, and may have anticancer qualities in hormonerelated cancers of the breast and prostate, BBC health reported. Cells in the lung have properties that suggest they may also respond to is flavones. Researchers studied more than 36,000 men and more than 40,000 women, 45 to 74 years old and free of cancer at the start of the study. The researchers followed the women for about 11 years, after […]

At least one Big Business is listening to its consumers. Nestlé announced this month that they will no longer be using artificial colors in its candy products and the chocolate makers hope that other food manufacturers will soon follow suit. EWG research shows that artificial colors are heavily used in processed foods that have little nutritional value. The additive is an ingredient in about 12,500 products in EWG’s online food database, Food Scores: Rate Your Plate. Over the last 40 […]

But there’s a steep price to pay for all of that sunshine, including skin cancer and skin aging. The UVA and UVB rays are to blame, as they can cause the formation of free radicals, a term used to describe damaged cells that can be problematic. “Sun is good,” said Judy Spindler, a nutrition health coach at Natural Grocers. “We need it for hormones and to feel well, but it […]
