Simple Green Smoothie
A green smoothie can be blended in a matter of seconds and makes for a delicious breakfast, snack, or post-workout recovery drink. Juicing can remove fiber from fruits and vegetables, taking away some of the nutritional benefits of these foods. Making a smoothie or shake instead is simpler (just throw in the whole ingredient and blend!) and keeps the fiber intact for increased satiety. Instead of basing your beverage on fruit, make vegetables your main ingredient and flavor with sweet fruit and other culinary flavors like cinnamon or vanilla. Feel free to swap in your personal favorites if desired. Ingredients […]READ MORE

Living a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things you can do to slow down the aging process. This includes eating whole foods, exercising daily, not smoking, and keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum. Maintaining a healthy weight is right up there too for protecting your body against the threat of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardio vascular disease. When I advise my patients to be mindful of the foods they eat in order to keep them looking and feeling good, I am often asked the same question: “ What are the best foods for me […]

What is a medium? One doesn’t really hear the word “medium” much anymore unless you’re watching 1950s horror movies. But it has a real definition. A medium is someone who claims to speak with spirits, non-existent entities that have been the subject of myths since humans could communicate with one another. Anthony Williams has made this claim. Since age four, when he shocked his family by announcing that his symptom-free grandmother had lung cancer (which medical testing soon confirmed), Anthony has been using his gift to “read” people’s conditions and tell them how to recover their health. He’s done this […]

By now we know that what we eat makes a huge difference in our health. If I told you that there is one nutrient proven to maintain weight and lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes, I am betting that you would not hesitate to add it to your diet right away. Well, this “magic bullet” actually exists, and it is not a newly discovered or expensive nutrient developed in a lab. What I am talking about is fiber, and it is found in normal, everyday foods that you may already have in your home. Fiber is a type […]

Pumpkin spice may be the seasonal flavor du jour (or du decade!), but there are several science-backed reasons why peppermint should top your flavor list this holiday. Not only does the fresh taste of peppermint offset and brighten many of the season’s more indulgent choices, but it also comes with compelling health benefits. An aromatic herb in the mint family, peppermint is a cross between water mint and spearmint, and it’s most often used as a flavoring in breath mints, candies and other foods, and brewed as a caffeine-free tea. The leaves of peppermint contain several essential oils, including menthol, […]

Research reported in Epigenomics reveals a potential role for curcumin and other natural compounds in the prevention or treatment of stomach cancer. “Here, we review the recent findings on histone acetylation in gastric cancer and discuss the effects of nutrients and bioactive compounds on histone acetylation and their potential role in the prevention and treatment of this type of cancer,” write Danielle Queiroz Calcagno of the Federal University of Pará and colleagues Histones are proteins that exist in the cells’ nuclei which organize DNA into structural units known as nucleosomes. A nucleosome is made of DNA coiled around the histones, which compact the […]

For a while now, many of my patients have asked me about a product called African Mango for weight loss. They’ve seen it all over the internet, read about it in magazines and heard about it from television talk shows. It’s touted to significantly reduce body weight, improve cholesterol and blood sugar. So, I thought I’d tell my readers about this substance and let you decide for yourself if you’d like to try it. Here’s what I’ve learned about it… Why is Everyone Talking About African Mango? A few years ago, news about a seed extract from the African plant […]

Grace O and some members of the FoodTrients team just returned from a whirlwind trip to France where we met food writers and professionals from around the world, and discovered again how food is truly an international language that connects us all. As one of Gourmand International’s “Best in the World” 2017 award winners for her AGE BEAUTIFULLY Cookbook, Grace and the team were invited to Paris, along with other winners from the past three years, to attend the Gourmand World Summit from March 20 – 22. The 2019 Summit, which was held at UNESCO Headquarters, brought together the huge […]

The gluten-free diet has been widely adopted by people that don’t have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Why? Well, in many cases there is a good reason to try it out, but there are also many misperceptions that lead people down the wrong path. Can eating gluten-free really make you lose weight? Are all of the processed gluten-free foods healthy, and, are they healthier because they don’t have gluten? Why are gluten-free items located in the “health food” section of my grocery store? There’s certainly a lot to discuss, so let’s look at these questions and more. I can still […]

Research presented on February 11, 2019 at FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) Week London supports the potential for calorie restriction to protect against several diseases. The studies were conducted under the auspices of the Center for Research on Redox Processes in Biomedicine, which is funded by FAPESP. “We are looking at how changes to the diet affect metabolism and how that ends up changing the odds of having diseases associated with aging,” commented researcher Alicia Kowaltowski, of the University of São Paulo. In one experiment, a group of mice was allowed to consume as much food as they desired, and the number […]
